Easy ways to add home comforts to your toilets

Offices, shops, restaurants – businesses up and down the country are re-opening their doors and welcoming staff and customers back into their midst. It’s an exciting time but for many of us, it’s a little daunting too.

After more than a year of staying at home, we’ve become accustomed to being in our own familiar surroundings. And – hand-in-hand with this – we’ve grown used to all our home comforts too.

So, if you’re looking for ways to ease the transition for staff back into the office. Or want to help make customers feel more relaxed and at ease, it’s going to be the little touches that make the biggest difference. And one of the best places to start is by taking a closer look at your toilets.

Why the toilets?

Of all the public places we feel most uncomfortable, lavatories probably rank highest.

For over a year now, we’ve been working from home, public toilets have been closed and we haven’t even been allowed to use the bathrooms of friends and family! So, heading back to public loos is going to be a bit of a shock to the system.

What can you do to help?

Last month the team here at M&P Cubicles and Hardware Supplies looked at ways to improve the safety of toilets and increase public confidence with our blog, ‘How to boost business post lockdown – with your toilets’.

But this time we’re focusing on improving the overall user experience. And the good news is, making toilets more user friendly and offering a few home-from-home comforts, doesn’t need to cost vast amounts of money or involve an abundance of time and energy.

On the contrary, all that’s needed are a few simple touches. Here we take a closer look at what they are…

5 easy ways to enhance your toilets

  1. Upgrade fixtures and fittings

Whilst you might proudly display a well-regulated cleaning rota, how often is it actually checked by anyone? Instead, people cast judgments based on what they can see right in front of them.

So, whilst your toilets may actually have been beautifully cleaned just half an hour ago, if there are rusty locks, broken hinges and toilet rolls lying around, people will quickly jump to the wrong conclusion about the levels of cleanliness.

Combat this by replacing any damaged fixtures and fittings, making sure toilet roll dispensers are secure and taking time to assess your toilets fully. Make a list of everything that needs replacing and get it sorted.

2. Improve signage

“Excuse me, where’s the loo?”

Answer this question in advance by providing proper signage and save people the embarrassment of having to make a public announcement when they need to use the toilet.

3. Add fragrance

One of the best ways to help people feel more at home? Make your toilets smell nice!

Smells have a huge impact on how we perceive our surroundings, and the right scent can really breathe life into a room. But we don’t just mean lining up an army of air fresheners ready to spritz over any bad smells – we’re talking about a constant subtle fragrance. You can use anything for this – a diffuser perched on a window ledge, potpourri or how about a battery-operated dispenser that will routinely emit a pleasant perfume to keep the room smelling sweet.

4. Stay well stocked

Making sure there’s plenty of soap is more important than ever at the moment, but to really put people at ease, it’s essential that all supplies are kept well stocked. That means plentiful hand soap, toilet paper and paper towels.

5. Don’t forget the finishing touches

It’s all in the detail – and adding a few extra touches will make people feel right at home.

Easy ways to achieve this include, hanging pictures, putting out complimentary hand moisturiser, even adding a vase of flowers – just be mindful that dead flowers will be entirely counterproductive, so how about faking it? These days artificial flowers and house plants look just as good as the real thing – and you don’t have to worry about remembering to water them!
