Top tips to make small commercial toilets look and feel bigger

More desks, floor space, storage room or spacious toilets?

Faced with a decision like that, it’s no real surprise that when it comes to prioritising space in a commercial environment, toilets invariably get overlooked.

Yet, accessible and inviting bathrooms are more important to business than you think. Clean, attractive, and comfortable toilets not only help to promote a more content workforce, they also contribute to the reputation of your company.

The good news is, small can still be mighty. There are several ways you can enhance the space available to make commercial toilets look and feel more spacious than they really are.

Keen to know how? Here the team at M&P Fittings share insider tips on how to maximise the size of commercial toilet cubicles.

Choose wall-hung toilets

Lifting toilets off the floor helps to create the impression of more space – and it’s not all an illusion!

Wall-hung toilets don’t have bulky cisterns to help them sit closer to the wall – saving you inches of precious space.

Use IPS panels

Used behind toilets, sinks and urinals to cover over pipework, you might be wondering how IPS can help to save space – surely they take up more?

In all honesty, they do. But it’s marginal. And by creating a more streamlined look they can actually make toilets feel less cluttered – and they certainly help them to look more attractive!

Fit vanity units

Similar to IPS panels, vanity units also have the effect of simplifying and streamlining space.

Instead of squashing in single sinks, with limited room for users to place belongings, fit vanity units and you can make full use of the surface area available.

Pick the right colour

Simple but effective.

The colour of toilets cubicles, surrounding walls, and even the toilets themselves contribute to the sense of space within bathrooms.

Dark colours dominate, bringing walls in, shrinking space, and making things more cramped.

Instead, opt for light, bright shades and you will immediately feel the difference.

Increase light

Dark and dingy spaces can feel like they’re closing in on you – so let there be light!

Where possible the best solution here is to use natural light. However, if windows are in short supply, just fit plenty of light fittings instead, to illuminate and open up the room.

In particularly small commercial toilets, the best option is to go for spotlights. Fitted flush into ceilings, these won’t encroach any further on space and are easily positioned to ensure all areas of the bathroom are well lit.

Use mirrors

To really benefit from your colour choices and available light, it’s a good idea to hang plenty of mirrors. Not only are these attractive and useful for bathroom users, but thanks to their light and space-reflecting qualities they can also dramatically increase the sense of space in a compact bathroom.

Get clever with storage

If space is already tight, don’t restrict things further with unnecessary clutter.

Keep surfaces clear. Not only does this enhance the sense of space but also makes for easy (and faster!) cleaning.

If you’re concerned about where to keep supplies – the spare loo rolls, fresh soap etc – then it’s time to get smart with your storage. Use otherwise redundant space, such as under sinks, to create a compact and safe place to stow essentials.

Try built-in appliances

Soap dispensers precariously balanced on the edge of small sinks? Paper towels and toilet rolls littering surfaces?

Untidy bathrooms emphasise the lack of space, so why not keep things in place and switch to built-in dispensers and holders?

Hand towel dispensers and fixed toilet roll holders free up surfaces and help to keep things tidy. Wall-mounted soap dispensers can also alleviate the demand on space.
