6 essential features all toilets should have

The workplace, school, hospital, or gym – toilets are pretty fundamental in most settings.

Yet whilst the demographic of users may differ widely, the basic requirements do not.

Which is why – aside from the obvious of plentiful soap, hot water and loo roll – there are six essential qualities the experts at M&P Fittings firmly believe all toilets should feature.

Want to know what they are?

Then keep reading as we share all.

Privacy

Young or old, privacy should always be respected, and it is a huge part of creating a safe and comfortable environment for people of all ages to use the toilet.

The best way to achieve this is with sturdy, durable cubicle partitions. If panelling is old, cracked or feels loose and unstable, it should be replaced immediately.

Every door should also offer a lock that is easy to turn and doesn’t stick.

Vanity units

Sinks are essential and whilst the priority has to be providing rust-free, easy-to-use taps with plentiful hot water, incorporating sinks into a vanity unit can be a real game changer in a public setting.

There are several reasons for this.

Firstly, by hiding waste pipes and plumbing it improves the look (it also has the advantage of protecting the pipework from damage).

Not just this though, streamlining the area also makes thorough cleaning quicker and more efficient, which can help to boost hygiene levels.

Lastly, installing vanity units also provides much-needed surface area for users, offering space to place down belongings while washing hands.

IPS panels

Integrated plumbing system (IPS) panels are used to hide all the main services – waste pipes, cisterns etc.

Protecting pipework from harm, they are great for use in public spaces such as schools and hospitals as they create a neat, streamlined finish that not only looks smart but is easy to maintain.

Hugely practical for toilets and urinals, IPS panels can also be used effectively behind washbasins and hand dryers to prevent water damage.

Clear signage

Investing in clear, attractive signage is worth every penny. Whether directing clients or signposting patients, all toilets need to be properly marked out.

Not only does this take away the guesswork by making things clear for users, but it also prevents any awkward mistakes, trepidation or embarrassment.

Coat hooks

This may sound a little basic to feature in the ‘essentials’ list – but don’t underestimate the value!

Using a public toilet isn’t like being a home. Regardless of how clean a toilet floor may look, no one wants to risk putting their belongings down – resulting in an uncomfortable juggle of coats and bags.

Fitting every toilet cubicle with a coat hook is a simple, inexpensive touch that can make all the difference to users.

Personality

Add a little cheer to a hospital setting, brighten up the day of school children or motivate gym goers or staff. Whilst toilet cubicles need to put functionality and practicality first, they 100% don’t have to be boring.

In fact, injecting a little colour and life into them is a great idea!

Opt for bright inspiring colours for school toilets, calming shades for medical environments, attractive wood effects for a corporate setting, or energetic shades for a gym.

Following through branding and colour schemes can also be effective, helping to make facilities feel inclusive and welcoming rather than a dingy afterthought.
