How big should a toilet cubicle be?

As the saying goes, size isn’t everything – but it is important.

So important in fact, that when it comes to public toilet cubicles, getting the dimensions right is actually a legal obligation.

Are you planning a toilet refurb? Keen to make sure you get things right and meet any set requirements? Then read on to find out more about the standard expectations for toilet cubicles.

Toilet cubicle sizes

The exact size of toilet cubicles is governed by the requirements set out in Building Regulations Part M and the Equality Act 2010, and it’s important to always check these to ensure your cubicles are fully compliant.

As a minimum, the current recommended sizes are as follows:

For standard toilet cubicles

Even without the restrictions of limited mobility or wheelchair use, it’s still important for a standard toilet cubicle to have enough room for users to be able to comfortably access and use the facilities. As such, all standard cubicles must now have a minimum diameter of 450mm to allow users to manoeuvre easily.

The recommended internal dimensions for a cubicle are 850mm wide and 1500mm deep. The door should also open inwards and be fitted with an indicator lock, which can be easily operated with a closed fist and allows for emergency access.

For ambulant disabled toilet cubicles

Designed for those with disabilities that don’t specifically require the additional space needed for a wheelchair, an ambulant toilet must be made available in any same-sex washroom. If there is only space for one toilet, then this must be fitted to ambulant standards.

Size requirements for ambulant toilets are 850mm wide x 1500mm deep (with an 800mm minimum width between surfaces), and whilst the dimensions are the same as a standard toilet, an ambulant cubicle must provide a minimum of three grab rails and be fitted with a door that opens outwards.

For enlarged toilet cubicles

If there are four or more cubicles in a washroom, one of these must be an enlarged toilet cubicle.

These super-sized spaces should have a footprint of at least 1210mm in width and 1500mm in depth, leaving no less than a 1200mm minimum width between surfaces.

Doors must open outwards, and the cubicle should be fitted with horizontal and vertical rails around the toilet.

For wheelchair accessible toilet cubicles

To be officially classed as wheelchair accessible, cubicles must have a length of 2220mm and a depth of 1500mm.

Again, this type of cubicle requires an outward opening door to ensure accessibility – and this needs to be 950mm wide and have a 900mm opening.

Getting it right

Toilet cubicle dimensions aren’t an exact science. Yes, there is a minimum size restriction but there is no maximum. And, whilst it’s a good idea to maximise space, it’s also important to balance usability with practicality and the other demands placed on your setting.

If you have room to go above and beyond with the size of your cubicles, could you also incorporate a baby changing unit? Or might a Changing Places toilet be a possibility? These are all things worth thinking about if you have the luxury of abundant space.
